The Southern Aurora Memorial was officially opened on February 10th, 2019 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Southern Aurora railway tragedy. A head-on crash occurred just after 7.00am on February 7th, 1969 and the terrible sounds shook the town awake! The small community of Violet Town responded immediately and went to work entering the wreckage and rescuing survivors. Nine people died and over 50 were seriously injured but countless numbers of lives were saved by this rapid voluntary response.

The Strathbogie Shire ordered and commissioned a Greenplate® Solar Barbecue for the Southern Aurora Memorial Park as part of its contributions to the Memorial Gardens which will serve to remember all those affected by the tragedy. The barbecue will provide years of pleasure to visitors and residents alike and is another fine example of how free energy from the sun can be converted in to sizzling hot barbecue fun for all to enjoy.

The feedback on the barbecue from visitors to the park has been overwhelmingly positive and the Council are delighted with its new asset with a Council Officer stating …

“The BBQ is fantastic and looks really good, we are very happy with the product and how well it is put together.”
